Lottery: City woman plans home buy with $1M

Weeks after winning big on a scratch ticket she bought at Gloucester’s Liquor Locker, Gloucester resident Patricia Joseph claimed her $1 million prize at Massachusetts Lottery headquarters Tuesday.

Indications are that Joseph plans to use the money to purchase a new home, after fire destroyed her house years ago.

Joseph had bought the $10 ticket for a game called the “$4,000,000,000 Jackpot” on June 22, soon after the instant game debuted in Massachusetts. Another winner beat her to the claim of first to win the game, but Joseph will still collect her own lump sum, of course.

Joseph did not return calls for comment immediately Tuesday, but a Lottery spokeswoman said she had elected to take her payment in a one-time lump sum of $650,000, with taxes already deducted from the prize.

Her spouse, Mary, joined her at the Lottery headquarters in Braintree to accept the prize Tuesday.

“The couple revealed that they had lost their house to a fire a few years ago and plan to use the winnings to purchase a new home,” Lottery spokeswoman Beth Bresnhan said.

The Liquor Locker will also receive a $10,000 commission on its first major winning ticket sale, according to store owner Wayne Campbell.

“I was saying to myself, ‘My God, we sell a lot of tickets, and (with) all the tickets I’ve sold, none of my customers have had a real big scratch ticket before,” Campbell said in an interview after the big win.
