City man confesses to thefts from parents

A 25-year-old Gloucester man turned himself in to police Tuesday, confessing to the thefts of jewelry and musical instruments that rocked his family, officers said.

According to police, Vincenzo Mannone stole the items from his parents' Burnham Street home several weeks before the thefts were reported, and his father told police that he thought his son had stolen the items in order to get money for drugs, specifically heroin.

Vincent Mannone, the father, works as a musician on weekends, and so the theft of his amplifiers, drum sets and DJ rack put his livelihood at risk.

In order to get them back without waiting the several months for the case to be resolved, the elder Mannone had to buy the items from the Beverly store that had purchased them, according to the police report.

According to police, the son had sold one of the drum sets for $50, though it cost the elder Mannone $480 to buy in the first place.

Vincent Mannone told police that his son had a heroin problem and had sold the items, including jewelry that had significant sentimental value, in order to buy drugs.

The younger Mannone sold the items for less than they were worth likely because of his desperation, police believe.

When the thefts were first reported, the elder Mannone told police that he did not know where to find his son, because the 25-year-old was homeless.

When police located him last week, he agreed to surrender himself Tuesday.
