Rockport DPW getting $375K worth of upgrades

ROCKPORT — The town’s Department of Public Works is getting a $375,000 upgrade, with new fuel distribution software and pump station maintenance is in the works.

With the Board of Selectmen unanimously approving the contracts last week, the Department of Public Works is due to get a new fuel distribution system and an upgraded fuel pump near Old Garden Beach.

Joe Parisi, DPW director, said the beach pump station at Old Garden Beach is one of 12 the town has in place, pumping waste from the southern portion of the town to main pump station at Dock Square, from which it goes to the wastewater treatment plant.

The $300,000 contract was awarded to Methuen Construction, with Western and Sampson as the design engineers, Parisi said.

Like most other pump stations, this one is largely underground, he said, and the updates are a part of routine maintenance and parts replacement.

”Every so often they need to be upgraded,” he said.

He expects the work on the pump station to last about three months.

Selectmen also approved new fuel distribution software for the DPW.

Parisi said the current fuel distribution system is working, but it is old.

The new software will better keep track of what vehicles refuel at what times and what specific departments they belong to.

Parisi emphasized that inaccurately or deliberately filling up has not been an issue in the past.

“It’s not so much and issue, the system is old and antiquated,” he said.

Parisi said the $75,000 fuel distribution system contract was awarded to Northeast Petroleum, with money for both projects approved at last year’s Annual Town Meeting as part of the DPW budget.
