Gloucester Police/Fire: Men with shovels, detectors elude police

Police responded after receiving a call from a woman who said she saw two men with shovels and metal detectors digging near a federally-registered archeological site in Ravenswood Park Saturday at 4:22 p.m.

The caller provided descriptions, but police did not find anything. She said the two men had been there digging two years ago as well.

Police responded to 5 Holmans Court Saturday at 10:56 p.m. for a report of people living in a foreclosed house.

Police arrived and found four people in the residence, and one said he had just paid rent to live there.

Police said they were investigating to determine if the four could stay in the residence.

While patrolling on the police boat, officers found a man hauling a lobster line without a buoy at 10:37 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, the man tossed a lobster overboard when he saw officers, and said he was fishing for crabs. Police reminded him of the rules for lobstering and left without filing any charges.

Officers chased a group of youths out of Babson Reservoir Saturday at 6:55 p.m. The youths were swimming and police told them about the consequences of swimming in a public water supply.

A woman told police at the station Saturday at 6:11 p.m. that, sometime between then and June 28, someone had broken into a house she was watching.

Police went with the woman to the house and saw that someone had broken open the back door and rifled through a strongbox and a red bag.

The woman said she didn't know what was in there, and told police that the owner of the house is in a nursing home. She added that several containers of prescription drugs had been taken from the house as well.

Police are investigating, and have no suspects at this time.

A resident of 14 Gould Court called police at 12:26 p.m. Saturday saying that the dirt bikes her son and a friend ride were taken from her building's common area.

Police said they had found the bikes on Friday and had them in the station garage. The woman retrieved them.

Police found that someone had torn down "no parking" signs on Washington Street by Leverett Street Friday at 3:48 p.m. Police notified the Department of Public Works, which is to replace the signs.
