Fire guts Rockport lobster boat

Saturday afternoon blaze guts Rockport lobster boat

ROCKPORT — A fierce fire virtually destroyed a lobster boat in Rockport’s Harbor just off Bearskin Neck Saturday afternoon, but the two people aboard and responding emergency crews all escaped injury.

Firefighters responding to calls — and to the column of smoke — found the boat, the Kalyn D, “fully involved” in flames. Firefighters, Rockport police and the town harbormaster’s office all rushed to the scene, with harbormasters Scott Story and Rosemary Lesch helping to pull the boat’s occupants to safety. The vessel is owned by Ryan Drohan, and regularly operates out of Rockport, Story said.

“Thankfully, he was able to get it into the harbor,” Story said. “He said he was just getting it into the harbor, and they thought they smelled plastic or something burning. The next thing they knew ... boom.”

Story said that officials had not yet determined the cause of the blaze, which heavily damaged both decks. And while firefighters initially had the fire knocked down in the afternoon, portions of the vessel continued to smolder into Saturday evening.

The vessel Ocean Reporter, captained by retired Rockport fishermen Bill Lee, assisted in salvaging the vessel.

Owners Kathy Milbury and Barbara Stavropoulos of My Place By The Sea, the restaurant that sits at the end of Bearskin Neck and just opened two weeks ago after it sustained heavy damage in the string of February storms, also pitched in, supplying fire and rescue crews with food and beverages as they continued the fire cleanup.
