A scallopers' memorial

Vigil salutes crew of Foxy Lady II

Wallace “Chubby” Gray, Jr. and Wayne Young both lived in Deer Isle, Maine.

But they and their scalloping boat — the Foxy Lady II, which was home-ported in Gloucester — were remembered as Gloucester fishermen Sunday when dozens gathered for a vigil in their honor at the city’s Fishermen’s Memorial on Stacy Boulevard.

The vigil was organized by the Revs. Rona Tyndall, Anne Deneen, Wendy Fitting and other members of the local clergy and religious communities.

Young, 50, and Gray — who was 26, served as the boat’s captain and has a large extended family in Gloucester — were presumed lost at sea after the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the Foxy Lady II last Wednesday. The vessel disappeared after its last contact with land on Saturday, Dec. 15, with only its rescue capsule washing ashore in Saugus last Wednesday evening.

Young and Gray are the seventh and eighth fishermen who have tragically gone “down to the sea in ships” over the past four years, beginning with the January 2009 sinking of the fishing vessel Patriot.

The Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association, headed by Angela Sanfillipo, has established a memorial fund for the crew of the Foxy Lady II through BankGloucester. Donations for the Foxy Lady II Fund may be sent care of BankGloucester, 160 Main St., Gloucester MA 10930.
