A dark, one-act comedy about stretching one’s wings and leaving the nest will be presented to the public next Thursday by members of Gloucester High School’s Drama Club.
The production is the club’s entry in the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s High School Drama Competition. The students will gauge audience reaction and fine-tune their performances before the contest.
In the allegorical “The Cagebirds” by David Campton, birds live in a cage, each totally absorbed in his or her own particular characteristics. When the Wild One is introduced into their midst by their Master, she endeavors to persuade them to break out from their self-imposed dependence and imprisonment into the wider world outside.
“The Cagebirds” is being directed by Nick Neyeloff and junior Kelly O’Dea. Nicole Bauke, Matthias White, Christina Giambanco, Jessica Ingaharro, Zoe Paddock, Liz Stephens, David Sullivan, Danny Wood, Mikayla Healey and Madison Smith comprise the cast.
Gloucester will performing “The Cagebirds” at Ipswich High School on March 2 in one of the preliminary rounds of the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s High School Drama Competition. The high school festival is the METG’s premier event. Students from more than 100 high schools, including Rockport, Manchester Essex Regional and North Shore Technical, will perform 40-minute, one-act plays at various host sites. Tickets are $10 and only available at the door at each host site. Ticket-holders may see any one or all of the schools’ plays hosted at that school on that day.
The Gloucester High Drama Club also has new advisors this year. Jape Payette, who runs his own business, JapeScape Productions, Acting for Young Stars, is the newly appointed drama advisor. Neyeloff, a director at Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe, production manager and resident theater artist at The Cape Ann/Henry Allen Theatre Works and an acting coach and author of the play “Shadow Living” produced at The Annie, has been named the high school’s set and crew advisor.
Besides preparing “The Cagebirds” for the festival, Payette and Neyeloff produced “Apostrophe’s” with the Drama Club in December. The men are also gearing up for auditions for Gloucester High’s spring musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” to be presented at the Gloucester High School auditorium May 17 through 19.
The Drama Club’s presentation of “The Cagebirds” will be Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Gloucester High auditorium. Tickets are: $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
