Essex Police/Fire: New cruiser damaged in hit and run accident

ESSEX — A motorist skimmed the new Essex police cruiser with his car Sunday, resulting in light damage to the rear of the cruiser, and kept on going.

An officer discovered the damage when he went to use the cruiser, which was parked outside the Essex Police Department on Martin Street.

Police are looking for any information related to the accident.

On Saturday around 1:45 p.m., a car went off John Wise Avenue and struck a mailbox. Police said there were no injuries reported, there was little damage to the car, and the motorist and the homeowner came up with a mutual agreement about compensation for the mailbox.

On Saturday, police stopped Arao Dornela, 37, of Collins Street in Peabody man for a marked lanes violation on Southern Avenue around 12:15 a.m. Police are seeking a criminal complaint against him for driving without a valid licence after finding his license had been suspended.

A woman denied medical treatment after hitting a deer with her car on Route 128 near exit 15. Essex police said state police responded to the accident and that there was some damage to the car.

Sunday around 7:30 a.m., police responded to a disturbance on Western Avenue. Police said a group of about 20 people were found loitering and asked to move along.

Police responded to a report of a car alarm sounding off around 12:15 p.m. Sunday outside a Main Street business. The restaurant owner phoned police because the car did not belong to anyone in the restaurant. The alarm was off by the time police arrived.
