N.E. press group names Times Newspaper of the Year

The Gloucester Daily Times has once again been judged among the best newspapers in New England, by a jury of industry peers.

The New England Newspaper and Press Association has named the Times its “2013 Newspaper of the Year” in the division for small, daily newspapers throughout the six-state region.

The award marks the latest in a string of honors for the Times, which also earned New England Newspaper of the Year honors in the same category in 2008; captured national Newspaper of the Year honors within its parent company, Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., in 2009 and 2010, and this past spring earned another CNHI national first-place honor when Cape Ann Magazine was named Magazine of the Year.

In capturing the most recent Newspaper of the Year honors, the Times was chosen tops in its category from among 102 papers that entered the contest throughout Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The NENPA organization includes 450 member publications overall.

Each year, the winning newspapers in each of more than a dozen categories — from major metro dailies and Sunday editions to weekly publications — are judged by outside experts brought in by NENPA who evaluate the region’s newspapers based on more than a dozen qualifications, including local coverage, quality of writing and reporting, sports, lifestyle coverage, photography, page design and quality of editorials.

“Congratulations to the Times staff,” said Karen Andreas, publisher of the Times and its sister papers in the North of Boston Media Group. “And congratulations to the Cape Ann community that demands and deserves outstanding local news coverage.”

The Times is a quintessential community newspaper, Andreas said, that focuses on “all things local,” whether news on the docks, in the classrooms, from City Hall or Main Street.

“We’re proud to be the local newspaper that people turn to for information they can trust,” Andreas said. “And I’m thrilled for the staff that the judges have recognized their tireless, outstanding work with this prestigious award.”
