'Wearable Art' showcase returns Sept. 29

Many exhibits and auctions offer works of art that a buyer or bidder can take home.

Cape Ann’s Society for the Encouragement of the Arts is once again featuring art the buyers can wear home — or conceivably put right on.

For the second time in three years, seARTS is extending Boston’s Fashion Week to Cape Ann and the North Shore with a Sept. 29 event at Cruiseport Gloucester showcasing both local and regional designs of fashion and “wearable art.”

SeARTS’ “Celebrate Wearable Art II” will offer a kaleidoscope of artistic fashion at the Cruiseport show, set to run from 2 to 6 p.m. The event coincides with Boston Fashion Week, which opens Sept. 27, and provides Cape Ann with its own focus on the excitement that happens when artists and designers apply their talent and imagination to fashion.

The event was created to provide a fun way to experience art as fashion, and fashion as art. There will be wearable sculptures and idea statements as garments, as well as clothing and jewelry for everyday life. The event will showcase outfits and accessories made with everything material from recycled newspapers to a wedding dress made out of recycled spinnakers.

The event opens with a wearable art marketplace, where both local and invited artists and designers will showcase and sell their creations, serenaded by the award-winning Beverly High School Jazz Quintet.

Afterward, guests will enjoy a “high tea” while a parade of professional and local models walk down the runway and through the audience, showing off dozens of fashion creations.

The event will include a creative raffle, with prizes donated by both exhibiting artists and local businesses. Prizes include items from the North Shore Music Theater, Peabody-Essex Museum, and many local artists.

Steve Aveson, the host of the NECN morning show, will be the tour-guide and emcee for the runway portion of the event, as he was for the first “Celebrate Wearable Art” event in 2011.
