Three Cape Ann artists are featured in the New England Watercolor Society's 2019 Signature Members Show, which opens Wednesday.

Tom Nicholas, a National Academician, and Judy Metcalfe, both of Rockport, and Gloucester's Marilyn Swift are among the nearly 100 artists selected from around the country to show their work at The Guild of Boston Artists on Newbury Street in Boston. The show runs Feb. 6 to March 3.

Two of the Cape Ann artists won prizes: Nicholas won the Virginia Avery Memorial Award for his painting "Florence, Italy" and Metcalfe won the George Shedd Memorial Award for her painting "Free Spirit."

The public is invited to the awards reception and and the exhibition"Art Outside the Box" this Saturday, Feb. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Boston gallery.

Visitors to the show will find an array of subjects and styles, from traditional paintings of New England scenes to abstract works. Some artists reveal their forays into untried techniques and explorations of new artistic territory as they experiment with color and light to bring the viewer into new realms.

The paintings by the Cape Ann artists demonstrate the diverse nature of the works on exhibit with Nicholas' painting of Florence, Swift's painting of the historic sailing ship Friendship, and Metcalfe's painting of brightly colored flowers.

"Our members are a really eclectic group, with talents branching out in many directions. This exhibit showcases the creativity and technical ability possible in water media," said Wendy Hale, president of the New England Watercolor Society.

This year’s exhibition judge is Cindy Baron, who was awarded Signature Status of the American Watercolor Society.

As part of the society’s commitment to education, award-winning member artists will give free painting demonstrations and gallery talks on weekends.

The society traces its history to 1885. Among its past luminaries were John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Nelly Littlehale Murphy and Andrew Wyeth . Currently, there are nearly 200 signature members and an overall membership approaching 400.
