Dog Day Afternoons

MIKE SPRINGER/Staff photoFury, a dog belonging to Ruth Witkes of Lynn, looks out over the swimming pool at the Cape Ann YMCA's Camp Spindrift in Gloucester. For the second year in a row, the YMCA is opening the Spindrift pool to dogs. On the day of Fury's visit, the pool was in the process of being refilled.

The YMCA of Cape Ann is allowing Camp Spindrift to go to the dogs this week.

Before closing the camp for the winter, now that children who attended summer camp are in class, the YMCA is offering local dog owners the opportunity to let their pets run freely on the camp grounds. The canines may also swim in the pool, which has been cleared of chlorine, during the "Dog Day Afternoons."  All the canine campers have to be attended by a human.

The camp, 57 Atlantic St., is open for Dog Day Afternoons, which began last week, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. through Friday.

The event is free but tax-deductible donations to support the children of Y Day Camp Spindrift will be accepted.
