BEVERLY — A Beverly Farms man about to stand trial next week in a 2015 shooting in Gloucester has died.

Prosecutors Wednesday dismissed the case against James Stokes Hewson Jr., who died last week at the age of 62.

Hewson was charged with attempted murder and other charges, stemming from the shooting of Minglewood Tavern bouncer Robert McNutt on Feb. 21, 2015, after Hewson was thrown out of the bar.

The trial had been delayed nearly a dozen times as Hewson's attorney fought for evidence concerning unrelated investigations into Gloucester police officers involved in Hewson's case, and then by the attorney's recovery from surgery.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, Hewson's father, Dr. James S. Hewson Sr., died just days after his son.
