AMESBURY — The body of an apparently homeless man was found by police off Kimball Road late Tuesday afternoon, the second man’s body found in less than a week.

According to police Chief Kevin Ouellet, officers were called to the area of 135 Kimball Road Tuesday by a friend of the man whose body was found in a tent where he appeared to have been living. The body was fully clothed and dressed in sweatpants, sweatshirt, wool socks and a wool hat.

A sleeping bag and small heater were also found at the scene. While the body was identified, police would not release the man’s name until his next of kin could be notified.

Tuesday’s discovery comes five days after an unidentified body was found on the riverbank in the area of 154 Pleasant Valley Road, late Friday afternoon.

That afternoon, a man’s body was found on the banks of the Merrimack River in Amesbury by a man walking his dog. The state medical examiner ruled that man had drowned, but no name has been released.

While police said there was no indication of the cause of death of the man found Tuesday, foul play was not suspected. The dead man’s friend told officers he had been checking frequently on the man who lived in the tent and called police immediately after he found the body.

Investigators from Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office also responded to the scene. The DA’s office said the cause and manner of death will be determined by the state medical examiner after an autopsy is performed in Boston.

No foul play is suspected in the earlier case either. While the results of a toxicology test have yet to be released, the cause of death was drowning, according to Blodgett’s office.

Since the first body was discovered, the Amesbury Police Department has been flooded with calls from people wondering who was found and whether it might be a specific person reported missing.
