There is still just over three weeks remaining in the decade. But when it comes to the high school sports landscape, the 2010's have already come to a close as there is about two weeks of winter sports on the schedule before the calendar turns to 2020.

The first week of winter high school sports tryouts is almost complete, and next week local teams will be seeing their first taste of regular season action.

Fall Sports MVP- Cate Delaney, Gloucester field hockey: Gloucester's senior captain is one of the most consistent and productive players in program history, and she ended her high school career in impressive fashion in leading Gloucester to the Division 2 North Finals.

The winter high school sports season had a bit of a soft opening on Monday afternoon.

On Monday afternoon, weather permitting, the winter high school sports season is scheduled to open up with the first day of tryouts. But before we get to the winter, it's time to wrap up an impressive fall sports season on Cape Ann.


The 2019 high school football season came to an end for the Gloucester football team Thursday with a rough 61-12 Thanksgiving Day loss to rival Danvers.

All-time Thanksgiving series: Manchester Essex leads the series, 16-13 and has taken over the lead over the last decade-plus with nine wins in the last 12 Thanksgiving Day meetings.


All-time Thanksgiving series: Gloucester leads the Thanksgiving series, 37-18, which started in 1964, as well as the all-time series, 45-22-2. The teams, however, have split the last six meetings with the home team taking all six of them.

After three weeks of consolation games, the Gloucester football team will be finishing up the 2019 season with one final Northeastern Conference rivalry game at Newell Stadium.


Cate Delaney's high school field hockey career came to a fitting end this past weekend.

For their accomplishments in both the classroom and in their respective athletic endeavors, Manchester Essex Regional football standout Lars Arntsen and Beverly High cross country star Heidi Eberhardt have been selected as the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for October.

The sectional finals were not kind to Cape Ann teams as they combined to go 0-4 in the sectional championship game this season. That means the fall season is just about finished in the area.
