With its largest contingent ever to participate in the Mount Washington Road Race last Saturday, 22 Cape Ann residents had their fair share of success tackling the 7.6-mile uphill trek in uncharacteristically clear and warm weather.
Team Gloucester finished second in the Men's Senior Team Division. Led by their top five finishers Matt Curran, Bob Gillis, Mark Asaro, Steve Whittey and Phil Dunn, Team Gloucester posted a time of 7:45. Gate City Striders Triad Racing team finished first in the division with a combined time of 7:21:57.
Curran, 52, of Gloucester finished with the top Cape Ann time at 1:17:37, good for 40th place overall and fourth in the over 50 age category. Carrie Parisi was the top finisher in the women's 70 and over category with a time of 2:01.04 while Austin Souza finished fourth in the under 19 category with a time of 1:44:42.
Layce Alves finished 17th amongst the 248 woman competitors with a time of 1:31.45.
Ricky Gates of Colorado won the race with a time of 59:58, Gates is just the fifth man to complete the race in under one hour.
Gillis completed the race for the 27th straight year while his brother Mike Gillis competed for the 26th year in a row.
