Fishermen Youth Soccer and Cape Ann United had a highly successful spring 2019 campaign with eight teams qualifying for the Essex County Youth Soccer Association Championships, three teams winning the County title and one, the Grade 10 Boys Longshoremen, being crowned state champs.
The Longshoremen took the state championship by outlasting teams from 10 other leagues across the state in the Mass. Tournament of Champions this past weekend in Lancaster.
The team went 2-1 in pool play with a 6-2 win over a team from Worcester and a 5-0 win over Celtic AFC before dropping a 2-1 contest to Harvard. Still, the ECYSA champs were able to earn a spot in in the semifinals as a wild card berth.
Cape Ann United opened up the semifinals with a thriller against Douglas. The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, forcing penalty kicks, which the Longshoremen won, 4-2 to earn a 2-1 win and a berth in the finals.
The State Finals saw the Longshoremen face a familiar foe in North Andover, a fellow Essex County team. It was the rubber match between the two teams as North Andover won in regular season play and the Longshoremen won in the ECYSA Championship game.
It was another tight game, but Cape Ann United was ablet to pull away with a goal in the middle of the second half to go up 3-1. North Andover scored in the final five minutes, but the Longshoremen defense stepped up big to preserve the win and the state title.
It is the second state title for a Cape Ann United squad, the first since 2012.
The Grade 8 Cape Ann United Girls Fathoms and the Grade 12 Cape Ann United Boys Lumpers also won ECYSA championships while the Grade 6 Girls Fishermen Youth Soccer Tide, Grade 8 Boys Cape Ann United Schooners, Grade 10 Girls Cape Ann United Adrenaline and the Grade 12 Boys Cape Ann United Nor'Easters all competed in the ECYSA playoffs.
