Gloucester softball finishes strong

The Gloucester softball team is heading into the state tournament on an eight game win streak after Thursday’s 5-2 win at Lynn Classical in the regular season finale, which was a battle between the NEC North (Gloucester) and South (Classical) champs.

“The girls concluded the regular season with consistency,” head coach John Nicastro said. “Now it’s on to the tournament.”

Ella Marshall had two hits including a two-run homer in the fourth that cleared the fence. Tracy Wood, Liz Schuster and Riley Thibodeau had two hits each, Marisa Orlando had a good game defensively at third base. Sydney McKay went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out seven.

Gloucester finishes the regular season at 17-3 and awaits its opening round opponent in the Division 2 North State Tournament. Brackets will be released on Tuesday.

Hornets keep pace

The Manchester Essex baseball team is still alive for a share of the Cape Ann League Baker Division championship.

With a 6-2 win over North Reading, the Hornets improve to 14-5, 11-4 in the CAL. The team can clinch a share of the league title with Hamilton-Wenham if it can beat Georgetown on Saturday at Memorial Field in Essex (3 p.m.).

Harry Painter went six innings for the win, striking out eight and allowing only two hits, he also went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI at the plate. Dylan Wilson had two hits, Mike Quill drove in two runs, Luke Leavitt had a double and two runs scored, Bennett O’Leary drove in a run.
