For the seventh season in a row, the Manchester Essex girls tennis team is heading to the Division 3 North Semifinals.
With a 5-0 win over Amesbury in Wednesday's sectional quarterfinal match at Bass River Tennis Complex in Beverly, the defending Division 3 state champion Hornets, the No. 2 seed in the section, punched their ticket to the semifinals.
Manchester Essex (15-0) will take on the winner of Thursday's semifinal tilt between No. 3 Austin Prep (16-2) and No. 6 Swampscott (14-5), date and time TBA.
The Hornets were simply dominant on Wednesday against their Cape Ann League Baker Division rivals, following up a 4-1 win in the regular season with a shutout win in the postseason. Dating back to last year's state title run, Manchester Essex has now won six straight state tournament matches by a score of 5-0.
Olivia Mariotti, who was recently named the Cape Ann League Baker Division's Player of the Year, rolled at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to remain undefeated on the season.
Christina Bullock ran into a little trouble in the first set of her No. 2 singles match, falling 1-6 to Amesbury's Mareike Mueller. But Bullock bounced back to win the second set, 6-2 and won the decisive third set, 1-0, which was played as a tie breaker set because Manchester Essex had already clinched the victory.
Bridget Miller rolled at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1) as did the No. 1 doubles tandem of Andrea Rennie and Tatum Jobe (6-1, 6-1) and the No. 2 doubles team of Emily Andrews and Jessie Miller (6-0, 6-0).
